An Eye for an Eye

- How can Christ's statement, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill," be reconciled with His preaching of love instead of revenge as it refers to this Old Testament Law "eye for an eye?"

- What is "eye for an eye," "tooth for a tooth," "hand for hand," "foot for foot," "wound for wound," and "life for life?"

Subject: Regarding our responsibility
I am reading the following verses and have difficulty reconciling them: Here, our Lord requires us to depend on Him completely: Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: FOR WITHOUT ME YE CAN DO NOTHING. But here, our Lord Himself seems to convey our responsibility for salvation: Rev 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Paul also received this revelation: Phi 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. I look forward to God’s clarification on the matter.

I myself have been pondering on this question before and now after I found the truth. Before, I just did not mind the seemingly contradictory verses for I completely relied on my preachers of their admonition to just strengthen my faith. Now I found, and I hope it is God’s revelation, that the first move belongs to me. What I mean is to humble myself and accept God’s revelation and drop whatever I received as man’s explanation, more particularly the literal meaning, of the word. It is only then that I realized gradual understanding of the message behind the letter. I think this is what is meant by “work out your own salvation” for God cannot do this for us. It is only after the foregoing humility that God has seen in us, giving Him a free hand to work in our life, that what our Lord said, “Apart from Him we can do nothing” begin to apply. And “to overcome,” our Lord must be referring to our continuous dependence on Him regarding the spiritual aspect of our life.

A supplement to the brethren's posting.   Philippians 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much  more in my absence, work out your own  salvation with fear and trembling."   It is really the humbleness and the will to convert one self like a babe As written:   Psalms 2:11"Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling"   Proverbs 8:13 "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and  arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I  hate."   Luke 10:21 "In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and  said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven  and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast  revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for  so it seemed good in thy sight."   Hating evil pride,  having the will to convert and be as babes  you will be in the kingdom of heaven as written:   Matthew 18:3 "And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.   Upon conversion, you are now given the understanding of the mystery of the kingdom of God and comes with it the knowledge and disclosure of the parables behind the literal words of God according to:   Mark 4:11 "And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:   Those who do not have Christ can not be fruitful and can do nothing with the spiritual realm. It is because those words are still in parables, but  you as among converted that completely trusting God will be given the spiritual understanding on His words  as written:   Jeremiah 31:33 "But this shall be the covenant that I will make..After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And they shall TEACH no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, KNOW the LORD: for they shall all KNOW me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD...". James 1:5-6 " If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.."   You can not bring forth much fruit without God because the kingdom of heaven/God is as written:   1 Kings 8:39 "Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)   And the kingdom of God is:   Rom. 14:17 "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.   "Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.     Having been converted the spirit of God dwells in you and the manifestation of its fruits as well.   Luke 17:21 “Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.     Cor. 3:16 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"   1 Cor 6:19  "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not on your own"   Hebrews 9:24 "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for"   Revelations 21:3 "And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.   Though the spirit of God dwells and working with in you- urging to follow the will of Him, is still warring to the spirit of the world with in.   1 Peter 2:10 "Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
